    ATKINSON HOME
, 7441 Dry Fork Road, Danville, VA. This Williamsburg-style house, built mid-1970s, resides amid five acres of a splendid landscape of established deciduous trees, conifers, boxwoods and flowering shrubs.  At the entrance to the circular drive, the owner’s love of gardening is readily evident.   Different garden vignettes have been developed around the home to include a pool, outdoor kitchen for entertaining, a cascading water garden, attractive wrought-iron gates, a family plantation bell and stone table with benches.
The interior is a Craftsman design with parquet floors in the foyer, cedar ceiling in the sunroom, a riverbed-stone fireplace in the dining room, and in the study a wall and fireplace with bricks from nearby Craghead Street. The house and patio are built with solid structural brick purchased from Carolina Brick Company.  Williamsburg-design chimneys enhance the beauty of the home. A foyer leads to an elegant dining room and spacious kitchen. The first level features a living room with a centennial grandfather clock, etched-glass door and historic mantel.  Attractive new additions include a Florida and family room overlooking the outdoor patio.  Of special interest are the Williamsburg-style wallpaper original to the home and a dulcimer crafted by the owner’s uncle. The second level includes an additional bedroom and master bedroom suite that has recently been remodeled.  Open for the first time for Historic Garden Week by owner Ms. Joann Atkinson.

This magnificent home located in Bridgewood features many new amenities along with treasured family heirlooms.  The attractive beige brick house in neo-traditional design was built in 2004.  A gallery-style foyer with hardwood floors opens to an expansive great room with gas-heated logs in the fireplace, a modern kitchen, breakfast area and dining room.  The great room showcases exposed beams, lavish wood details, ceiling fans and a beautiful view of balcony, yard and surrounding trees. The first floor includes a master suite, full bath, walk-in closet, guest bedroom and laundry room.  The kitchen features granite countertops, stainless-steel appliances, an island, honey-maple cabinets, breakfast area and walk-in pantry.
Throughout the interior, earth-toned hues blend harmoniously with attractive fabrics, furniture and area carpets. From a decorative wrought-iron stairwell with an open view of the great room, the second level provides two bedrooms and a large playroom for the children.  There is a full basement for entertaining, with two bars, pool table, seating area in front of a large-screen TV and a scenic view of the patio and children’s play area.  Open for the first time.  Mr. and Mrs. Scott Criswell owners.

GRUBB HOME, 6010 Cobblestone Court, Danville, VA.  Located at the bottom of a large cul-de-sac, this distinctive multi-gabled, hip-roofed brick residence was built in 2002 and is a fine blend of traditional and new styles.  The handsome mahogany double door opens to a dramatic two-story, marble-floored foyer accented with beautiful Oriental paintings and a bronze chandelier.  Off the foyer are a study and a formal dining area where the owner’s Kutani Wedgwood pattern complements the lush apricot décor.  In the great room, a glorious palette of yellows, greens and browns forms the background for artwork and Murano glassware from European travels. Majestic high ceilings and built-in bookcases further enhance the area.  Spacious Palladian windows overlook a setting of native trees in a well-manicured yard.
The main level provides a master suite featuring fresh colors in eucalyptus, along with an exquisite oil painting by the owner’s grandmother, an additional bedroom and a cheerful utility room. The upper level includes a daughter’s bedroom with a Chinese armoire dating to 1840, children’s den and an office with framed flue-cured tobacco leaves from the last tobacco crop produced on the Grubb’s family farm.   Open for the first time.  Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Grubb
