Warren County – Front Royal

The Front Royal Historic District is showcased on this walking tour in Warren County. Front Royal has been the county seat of Warren County since 1836. The town’s location near the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River enabled this charming village to become an important commercial center for the region. It was the site of the Battle of Front Royal, which took place in 1862, during General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign. The historic district includes the town’s main commercial core and surrounding residential neighborhoods, composed mostly of late-19th and early-20th century buildings. They range from popular styles of the period to distinctive vernacular building forms. The Garden Club of Warren County, the tour’s hosting club, will decorate featured properties with distinctive tablescapes highlighting seasonal garden-grown flowers and impressive floral arrangements sure to inspire visitors.
